St. Croix/Pierce/Dunn County UW-Extension Hosting Farm Transfer and Ag Law Series

Transferring the farm is no easy task. Recent data shows that farm transitions typically take several months to plan and complete. This workshop will cover some of the basics when planning to transition the farm, such as tax implications, what the retiring generation needs financially to retire, and how to determine if the farm can support the next generation. In addition, this program will focus on the development and implementation of various farm busienss ownership structures to transition the next generation into the farm business.

Speakers include Phil Harris, Farm Law Specialist with the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at UW – Madison, who will talk about updates regarding the 2010 tax relief act, other tax code changes, and the basics of Farm Business Arrangements. Greg Andrews, Pierce County Agricultural Agent, will discuss recent demographic and economic trends in the Pierce County area. Rich O’Connell, Compass Financial Services, will provide information financial planning for retirement.

The program will be held Monday, March 7, 10:30 am to 3 pm at the EOC Meeting Room, Pierce County Courthouse Annex Ellsworth. The registration fee is $10/person and the registration deadline is Friday, March 4. This event is co-sponsored by AgStar Financial Services, ACA. Wisconsin Farm Law Update

Phil Harris, UW-Extension Farm Law specialist, will be discussing the legal issues of farm leases, farmer liability, fence and trespass law, and a number of other farm law issues at the Wisconsin Farm Law Update to be held Monday, March 7, 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm at the Ag Center in Baldwin.

Farm Transfer and Beginning Farmer Financing Workshop

Dunn County UW Extension will be hosting a Farm Transfer workshop on Tusday, March 8 from 10:30 am t0 3 pm at the Dunn County Judicial Center in Menomonie. Cost is $10 per person and includes materials and lunch. The workshop is designed to assist farm families in beginning their farm business transfer plan to the next generation. Participants will be introduced to liability and tax implications with various business arrangements, updates on teh 2010 Tax Relief Act and potential financing options for beginning farmers.

Speakers and topics will include Phil Harris, Farm Law Specialist with the Dept. of Agricultural and Applied Economics at UW Madison, who will talk about updates regarding the 2010 tax relief act and other tax code changes. Katie Sternweis, Dunn County Agricultural Agent, will discuss the steps necessary to developing a plan for a farm transfer and various farm business arrangements that could be used for a farm transfer. Josh Rynes, Dunn County Farm Service Agency Farm Loan Officer, will provide information on Beginning Farmers and Ranchers loans and Lori Mueller, AgStar Financial Services Sernior Financial Services Officer, will provide information on AgStar’s Young Beginning Farmers loann programs.
