Grazing & Managing Pastures

Beginning Farmer Class

Whether you’ve been farming for decades and are interested in other types of farming, or you’re just starting your own farm operation and want to learn how to be successful at your business and livelihood, the Beginning Farmer Class – part of the University of Wisconsin’s Farm and Industry Short Course – is for you.

What is it? The Beginning Farmer Course is part of the Farm and Industry Short Course Program at UW Madison. Unlike traditional college classes, the Short Course and Beginning Farmer Course offer practical, real world training with a lot of hands-on experience and information that you can apply in your own operations.  It combines both traditional classroom activities with practical exercises all geared towards helping you to be successful in farming. You will hear from specialist and experts in the industry, Extension, and academia, and probably most importantly, past Beginning Farmer graduates who are successfully managing their farm operations.  Focus is on pasture-based dairy and livestock farming.

While the course itself is based out of Madison, the class can be taken via the distance education option which allows students the opportunity to participate in the classroom sessions through live interactive video webcast and audio feed.
